If you were married as of December 31st you have a choice to either file married filing jointly or married filing separately. You are no longer able to file as single. If you were married after December 31st, then you must file as single.
You claim yourself as an exemption whether you file separately or jointly, but only claim the dependents you are legally able to.
If you are asking what to put on your W-4 form, the less allowances you take, the more of a refund you will probably get at the end of the year. Single’s are taxed at a higher rate than married people, so if you want to get the maximum refund, you can still put single on your W-4.

If you are married you should file MFJ. If single file single. You could be a dependent if you where under 24 at the end od 2006 AND a full time student (for at least five months of 2006)
