how long, will it take the irs to take some money out of my brother’s tax refund send him the rest?

Did he electronically file? That would make the whole thing faster than by mail. Does he have a spouse? They put a hold on the money to allow his spouse to file an injured spouse form to attempt to get her part of the refund, so that takes longer also. He might check irs.gov, wheres my refund or call 1-800-829-1954, for refund status on the remaining $.

Due to Congress not finalizing some tax laws for 2007 until 11JAN08, the IRS was not able to process returns until their system had been updated to allow for the changes. The IRS appears to be about 3-4 weeks behind at this point. Your brothers refund will probably be mailed in short order. As for the child support; unless the IRS has that underpayment on file from the state, the owed money will probably not be deducted from his refund.
